Went to a church last night. It was silent, with a soft glow, because they'd lit it with candles. After several minutes of silence, the singing started. Behind us a chorus sang acapella, doing traditional Gregorian chants from the 1600s...

We listened for over an hour. My girlfriend described it later as "contemplative". I felt safer and accepted. If there is a god, I thought, he would forgive me.

When we left, I stared into the glow of the candles...
